What is scandium nitrate?
Scandium nitrate, with the chemical formula Sc (NO3) 3, is an inorganic compound that plays an important role in chemistry. Visually, scandium nitrate often appears as white or colorless blocky crystals with deliquescence. This means that it easily absorbs moisture in the air, making its surface gradually moist. In terms of solubility, scandium nitrate dissolves in water to form hydrated scandium nitrate, and its solubility increases with temperature, exhibiting good water solubility and ethanol solubility. This characteristic enables it to quickly dissolve and participate in many chemical reactions and applications.
From a stability perspective, scandium nitrate is relatively stable under normal temperature and pressure conditions. However, in order to ensure the integrity and safety of its properties, we need to avoid direct contact with reducing agents, easily oxidizable materials, and organic materials. Because such contact may trigger adverse chemical reactions, which could hurt our experiments or applications.
What are the applications of scandium nitrate?

  • Materials Science: It can be used to prepare high-performance optical glass, significantly improving i, giving it superior optical properties. In addition, adding it as an additive to aluminum alloys can effectively improve their performance, enhance their strength and corrosion resistance, and make them perform better in fields such as aerospace and automotive manufacturing.
  • In the field of energy, scandium nitrate can be used as a dopant for electrolyte materials in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). By doping scandium nitrate, the ion conductivity of the electrolyte can be improved, thereby enhancing the performance and efficiency of the battery. In addition, adding an appropriate amount of scandium nitrate to the positive electrode material of lithium-ion batteries can improve the structural stability and electrochemical performance of the material, and increase the cycle life and energy density of the battery.
  • Catalyst: In some organic synthesis reactions, catalysts prepared based on scandium nitrate can efficiently promote the reaction, and improve the selectivity and yield of the reaction. In the petrochemical industry, scandium nitrate is used for catalytic hydrogenation reactions, which can effectively convert unsaturated hydrocarbons into saturated hydrocarbons, improving product quality and yield.

In the research of Tan Minyu et al., solid complexes of scandium nitrate with ortho phenylene-17-crown-5 and ortho phenylene-14-crown-4 were prepared, and their compositions were determined to be Sc (NO 3) 3 · C ₁₆ H ₂₀ O ₇ · H ₂ O and Sc (NO 3) 3 · C ₁₄ H ₁₆ O ₆ · H ₂ O. 2. Qi Youxun et al. synthesized solid complexes of scandium nitrate and yttrium nitrate with dibenzo-24-crown-8 using anhydrous acetonitrile as the reaction medium.
