Usually, it should be stored in a sealed manner to prevent it from absorbing moisture in the air and deteriorating. The melting point of holmium chloride is about 718°C. This value may vary slightly due to factors such as measurement conditions.
Regarding chemical properties, when the hexahydrate of holmium chloride is heated, partial hydrolysis will occur to generate oxychlorides. When it encounters alkali, it will react to create hydroxide or oxychloride precipitates.

Holmium oxide or holmium hydroxide can be dissolved in hydrochloric acid, and then the obtained hydrochloric acid solution is evaporated, concentrated, and cooled to prepare hexahydrate holmium chloride. In addition, by heating hexahydrate holmium chloride in a hydrogen chloride gas stream (at a temperature of about 225°C), dehydration of its hydrate can obtain anhydrous holmium chloride; it can also be prepared by passing hydrogen chloride gas into holmium oxide at a red-hot temperature.
