Market Status And Technical Challenges Of Alumina

Apr 08, 2025 Leave a message

1. Global industrial landscape

Capacity distribution: In 2024, the global alumina production capacity is 135 million tons, with China accounting for 55% (mainly concentrated in Shandong and Shanxi), and Australia, Brazil, and India accounting for a total of 30%.

Market size: The price of ordinary industrial grade alumina is about 300-400 US dollars per ton, and high-purity (5N) products reach 50000-100000 US dollars per ton. The global market size is expected to be 125 billion US dollars by 2025, with an annual growth rate of 5.8% (data source: Grand View Research).

2. Key technical bottlenecks

Preparation of high-purity alumina:

The removal of impurities (Na ⁺, Fe ³ ⁺) is difficult, especially when the Na ⁺ content needs to be less than 10 ppm. The existing process has a high cost (about 50 times that of industrial grade).

Nanoparticle dispersibility:

Aluminum oxide particles below 50 nm are prone to agglomeration and need to be controlled by surface modification (such as silane coupling agents) or dispersants (PEG-2000) to improve dispersion efficiency to over 95%.

Transparent ceramic sintering:

The porosity during densification process needs to be less than 0.1%, and the existing hot isostatic pressing (HIP) process has high energy consumption (1500 ℃, 200 MPa), limiting large-scale applications.
